Artifact of the Month
Candlestick Telephone ca. 1920
Donor: Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Grosshans
Can You Hear Me Now?
This non-electric telephone was the first telephone ever used in Marquette,
NE.
It was used by William A. Tarbell to communicate between his office in the Marquette
elevator to his residence.
How did it work?
This “string telephone” connects two diaphragms with wire which
transmits the sound from one to the other by mechanical vibrations along the
wire and not by electric current. Another example would be the children’s
toy made by connecting two metal cans with string.
